Time off for study or training

Employees aged 16 or 17 who have not achieved 5 GCSEs at grades A-C are entitled to time off for study and training. To qualify for time off employees must:

  • Be aged 16 to 17 years old
  • No longer be in full-time secondary or further education
  • Have not achieved 5 GCSEs at grades A-C (or NVQ level 2, an Intermediate GNVQ, or equivalent qualifications).

Young people are entitled to reasonable paid time off during normal working hours to study or train for a qualification that will help towards achieving this standard, and therefore improve their future employment prospects. Certain employees aged 18 also have the right to complete study or training they have already started.
