Getting a job

Where can I find a job?

All our current vacancies for 16-19 year olds can be found in the vacancies section of our site.

Year 11 school leavers can start work or training full-time after the last Friday in June. You need to register for work at your local Connexions centre. If you are 16-19 and unenployed we can help you to find a job and/or a training place.

16 and 17 year olds cannot usually get benefits. You can ask about benefits when you register for work at your local Connexions centre. The Jobcentre Plus office will decide whether or not you can get any benefits.

Applying for a job

Whether you’re looking for part-time work or a full-time career you‘ll need to make applications and prove that you are the right person for the job. Whatever you have to do to get the job, remember that you are out to impress!

You might have to do one or more of the following things:

  • Telephone or email for details
  • Send a letter of application
  • Fill in an application form
  • Send a CV with a covering letter
  • Go for an interview
  • Do a test

Create a great CV

  • Keep it brief – one side of A4 is ideal.
  • Ask at school, college or at your local Connexions centre to see examples of CVs as a guide.
  • If you haven’t got a computer at home use one at school, college or local Connexions centre to write your CV.
  • Keep a copy on the computer or a memory stick so that you can change it and print off further copies whenever you need to.
  • Tailor your CV to the job you are applying for – if the job demands computer skills stress this in your CV. If communication skills are required for another job, change your CV to emphasise this.
  • Use the spell checker and get somebody else to check it for typing errors.
