Work-related learning and enterprise
What schools have to do…
Since September 2004, work-related learning and enterprise have been a statutory part of what a school has to deliver for KS4 students, building upon work undertaken as part of the programme of study for PSHEE at KS3.
The second edition of The Work Related Learning Guide gives guidance on all aspects of work related learning including the QCA curriculum framework, child protection and good practice. For a small leaflet containing the basic principles you can download ACEG's brief guide: Careers Education and Work-Related Learning (Autumn 2011).
The Government has said that 'high quality' vocational learning qualifications will continue to be listed in school performance tables.
What is work related learning?
WRL is planned activity that uses the context of work to develop knowledge, skills and understanding useful in work, including:
- Learning through the experience of work
- Learning about work
- Learning the skills for work
Good practice
Some key points to remember are that work related learning:
- Should not be a response to disaffection and/or under achievement
- Can build upon what already happens in school
- Can take place across the curriculum
- Needs clear outcomes
- Needs to be co-ordinated
What about enterprise?
Enterprise education is a central part of work-related learning and should be a key output from it.
Enterprise education is defined as “enterprise capability supported by financial capability and economic and business understanding.”
Local Support
The Careers Education and Information Team (CEdIT) at Connexions works with LEBC and VESA to support schools in delivering work related learning by offering training, consultancy and support events.
LEBC’s Enterprise Team works with schools and colleges to prepare young people for the challenges of working life; to help establish an entrepreneurial spirit and an understanding of economy and personal finance. The activities are targeted at Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4 students. For further information, see the Leicestershire Education Business Company website.
This VESA CPD Programme will focus on developing links between work experience and the curriculum and will explore how to maximize its contribution to student learning outcomes. This will include preparation for Diplomas. See the VESA website.
