Course

BSc degree in Geography, at the University of Leicester in my third year of a three year course.

Qualifications and experience:

I went to secondary school and sixth form college (both without being diagnosed with dyslexia) and got good grades at GCSE (7B’s 2C’s and a D) but was very disappointed with grades at A level only achieving C,C,E. I went on to be accepted at Leicester to study Geography. I went though the 1st year without being diagnosed with dyslexia. It was only when I failed an exam at the end of the year that I took my difficulties seriously, as I knew I had done enough revision to pass.

How is the course going?

Since I was diagnosed at the beginning of the 2nd year I have coped well. The first year was a bit of a struggle and I didn't know why. I had felt that the work was too difficult and that I must be missing something or not understanding the work, when I thought I was. From the second year onwards I really started to enjoy my work and do well it in. This change came about by me making the choice to go and tell someone about my difficulties. From there I received great support from the AccessAbility centre.

Who and what have helped me to succeed?

Things such as extra time in exams, a place to study and use computers, printers and photocopiers in a quiet environment, someone there to check through my work for spelling and grammar errors and to help me with other important tasks I have had to carry out, such as filling in application forms. This has been a vital part of my success at university and my continuing rising marks.

Any advice for other students?

DO IT! I have had the some the best experiences of my life and learnt a great deal both on and off my course. I have met so many interesting people and taken part in many activities that can go on my CV. I would say to anyone who asked me, choose a course that you are interested in doing and do not be too afraid about your disability, there is a lot of help out there for you.
