Governors

Schools and colleges need to provide high-quality and impartial careers education, information, advice and guidance (CEIAG).  The commitment and support of governors enables careers co-ordinators to fulfil their responsibilities to lead a high-quality programme of CEIAG for all pupils.

Changes to provision of Careers Guidance

Did you know…….?

  • From September 2012 schools become responsible for securing access to impartial careers guidance for every pupil in years 9-11
  • This guidance should be independent and include information about all 16-18 education and training options including apprenticeships.
  • There will be further consultation about whether this duty should be extended to cover year 8 and 16-18.
  • Local authorities will continue to be responsible for ensuring the successful transition of all young people into further learning and will have responsibility for ‘vulnerable’ young people including those with learning difficulties and disabilities and those at risk of becoming NEET.
  • The requirement is that face-to-face guidance is provided by somebody who is not employed by the school to ensure it is independent and impartial.
  • Destination measures are being developed to measure the success of what schools are doing in preparing their students for progression at 16.  Destination measures will “look at the success of schools in helping their pupils to progress on to positive post-16 destinations” DfE May 2011

These measures, to be published in KS4 and KS5 performance tables, will help young people and parents to judge how well schools are preparing their students to progress to positive destinations. This will indicate the quality of the careers information, advice and guidance being provided.

  • We expect Ofsted to be checking that senior managers are taking their responsibility seriously

What should I do?

Ask your Headteacher/Principal how they are going to ensure that the students in your school are going to receive independent and impartial careers guidance from someone not employed by the school.

If you need any help or advice contact our Heads of Operations on 0116 261 5900.
