Overview

Below are some resource ideas for use with groups of students along with useful weblinks to access more ideas for activities.

The Real Game Series is an exciting resource where students role-play young adults and learn decision making around lifestyle choices, work/life balance and budgeting.

GERI

Geri Project Logo

These are a range of materials aimed at challenging stereotyping and promoting equality and diversity in education, training and the workplace. The resources have been produced by the GERI (Gender Ethnic and Racial Inclusion) project. They include a series of teaching guides mapped to the learning outcomes relating to equal opportunities for career education, PSHE and Citizenship; a CD/DVD with role models of people who have entered non stereotypical careers; and most notably the DVD/Live Interactive ‘Gender Bias’ dramas. There are three dramas based on conflict scenarios arising from gender stereotyping. 

The resources are targeted at teachers, learning providers and other professionals working with young people. More details of these resources and downloadable copies of the teaching guides are available at the Geri website.

Make a Connection

Make a connection

Make a Connection is a Key Stage 3 PSHE and Citizenship resource for teachers, designed to develop young people’s personal social and academic skills through lessons and activities that focus on emotional literacy, creative thinking, conflict resolution, active citizenship and personal development skills, such as finance, decision-making, time management and stress. The programme is designed to be delivered on an inclusive basis across a full range of abilities using a learn by doing approach.

Make a Connection addresses the most recent government initiatives - The Children Act, Key Stage 3 Strategy, Behaviour and Attendance Strategy, Career Education and Guidance, National Healthy Schools Scheme, and PSHEE Certification Programme and is mapped into the PSHEE and Citizenship curriculum.

Developing Key Skills and Action Planning in Careers Education and guidance at Key Stage 4 – Differentiated Materials

Aims to provide teachers with differentiated materials for career education at key stage 4. The materials are aimed at students who have a low ability in literacy. There are exercises on key skills, self awareness, opportunity awareness and making decisions. Detailed tutor notes outlining aim, method of delivery and resource list accompany all lesson plans.

Key Stage 3 Resource Pack (currently being updated – available October 07).

A set of classroom resources with a matrix on how they link to the national outcomes for CEG. Also includes links to alternative resources.

Moving On Up

MOU is a project approach to supporting transition. It sets up transition teams that are self-managing groups of students that are supported to identify and explore issues and concerns about the coming transition, whatever the stage. It has been evaluated for the move between years 6-7 and 9-10 and has proved very successful.

Step Ahead

A resource pack designed to support a young person centred approach to planning and managing transition. The pack aims to develop young people's skills and knowledge to enable them to make a successful transition into work or training. The pack contains a series of activities that can be delivered as a whole programme or as stand-alone activities. Workwise publication

Workwise

These lesson plans were produced to accompany the Workwise resource, sent regularly into learning organisations.

Kangaroo

Kangaroo is a multimedia encyclopaedia of careers, life and labour market information. The latest update is Kangaroo 4 and comes with support materials for use in sessions with young people.

Supporting Transition (currently being updated – available October 07)

Aimed at careers coordinators, tutors, personal advisers, learning mentors and all those who have a professional interest in helping young people manage their transition to post 16 opportunities. It can be used as a training resource to inform and update staff on the post -16 transition process and use of the common application form (LeCAP), as a stand alone information resource and as a group work resource for young people.

Online resources

CEGNET

CEGNET is an online resource for those professionals involved in planning and delivering career education for young people. It gives advice and lesson plans on delivering the national framework for career education.

Teachernet

Teachernet links to over 2000 lesson plans and free online resources searchable by subject and key stage. Also includes sections on 14-19, Aim Higher, Special Educational Needs and Disability.
