Work- related learning (WRL)

What schools have to do…

Since September 2004, work-related learning and enterprise have been a statutory part of what a school has to deliver for KS4 students, although it is up to schools to determine the nature of that provision.

The minimum requirements are set out in “Work-Related Learning for all at KS4” (downloadable from QCA website). This document gives both advice and a nine stage framework for delivering work-related learning.  Although the framework is non-statutory, Ofsted inspections will be looking to ensure that the framework has been covered.

What is work related learning?

A definition of WRL given by DCFS…

WRL is planned activity that uses the context of work to develop knowledge, skills and understanding useful in work, including:

  • learning through the experience of work
  • learning about work
  • learning the skills for work

Good practice around work-related learning

Some key points to remember are that work related learning:

  • Should not be a response to disaffection and/or under achievement
  • Can build upon what already happens in school
  • Can take place across the curriculum
  • Needs clear outcomes
  • Needs to be co-ordinated
  • Performance tables now take account of vocational qualifications

What about enterprise?

Enterprise education is a central part of work related learning and should be a key output from it.

Enterprise education is defined as “enterprise capability supported by financial capability and economic and business understanding.”

From September 2005, government funding was given to schools with a KS4 to embed enterprise education (£60 million over three years).  KS4 students will be entitled to the equivalent of five days activity focussed on enterprise capability. It is expected that this funding will continue. Visit Teachernet for more information.

Work related learning support events

Connexions, LEBC and VESA work together to support schools in delivering work related learning.  The three organisations plan to offer three support events each year.  Each will focus on a different element of WRL.  Dates are listed in Training and Events and Learning Organisations will be notified individually nearer the time.
