HE additional needs case studies
Colleges and universities are aware of the needs of students with
disabilities. Many now employ a specialist disabilities adviser
to ensure students have full access to all services. Special provision
may be available to help you study, including electronic study aids,
flexible teaching and assessment methods, audio or Braille versions
of course material, and subtitled videos.
Disabled Students Allowances (DSAs) are available to cover extra
costs involved in attending an HE course, because of a disability
or medical condition. To be eligible, you must be taking a full-time
course, and qualify for personal maintenance support. Students should
apply for DSAs through their local education authority (LEA).
Skill, the National Bureau for Students with Disabilities, offers
information and advice on all aspects of HE and student life. They
also operate a free telephone helpline for other queries.
