
The Diploma
From September 2008 in some areas a brand new qualification will be available. The Diploma will allow you to combine classroom learning with hands-on experience in the workplace. You will also gain essential skills such as English, Maths and ICT giving you all the knowledge and expertise you need to progress in your chosen career.
What can I study?
The first five Diplomas in will be taught in some schools and colleges from September 2008:
- Construction and the Built Environment,
- Creative and Media,
- Engineering,
- Information Technology,
- Society, Health and Development
Another five Diplomas will be available in some schools and colleges from September 2009:
- Environmental and Land-based Studies,
- Business, Administration and Finance,
- Manufacturing and Product Design
- Hospitality and Catering,
- Hair and Beauty
The final four Diplomas will be introduced in September 2010:
- Travel and Tourism,
- Public Services,
- Sport and Leisure,
- Retail
How will I learn?
Studying for The Diploma will be different from your normal school or college work. As well as traditional classroom learning you will have the chance to learn in the workplace, and you may also attend another local school or college. You will develop skills like team working and problem solving alongside English, Maths and ICT to provide you with the essentialcombination of knowledge and skills that employers and universities look for. You can also study GCSEs and A Levels alongside a Diploma.
What types of Diploma are there?
There are three types of Diploma, each takes about two years to complete. A Foundation Diploma is a level 1 qualification and is roughly equivalent to five GCSEs at grades D to G. A Higher Diploma is a level 2 qualification, and is roughly equivalent to seven GCSEs at grades A* to C. An Advanced Diploma is a level 3 qualification for those over 16,and is expected to be roughly equivalent to 3 or 3.5 A levels.
What are my options after taking The Diploma?
The Diploma is designed to flexible so you can keep your options open while you find out more about subjects you are particularly interested in. After you finish you could go on to study the next level of The Diploma or take GCSEs, A levels or another qualification. You might decide instead to do an Apprenticeship or start a job with training.
