How have I coped with my current course or option?
On my current course I have had to deal with more deadlines and a higher volume of work than in any other level of study I have undertaken. I have had to get organised by making sure I plan ahead, and ask for help when I don’t understand something. The chances are if I go over it again, I will understand it.
What have been the difficulties and how have I dealt with them?
I have a really bad memory so my main difficulty has been remembering details such as case names and deadlines. I find mind mapping helps with the case names, and I have a diary, wall chart, and several reminders on my phone and computer to make sure I don’t miss any deadlines. My spelling and grammar are also a little weak so I have to make sure I read through my work really carefully. My friends and tutors are always there to lend a hand if I need a fresh set of eyes to check for mistakes. There is also a student support centre where there are staff who are available just for proof reading which I have found really useful.
Who and what has helped me to succeed?
Perseverance: if I don’t understand something the first time
I keep trying until I do. I will use all the resources that are
available to me including my long-suffering tutors to make sure
I fully understand any grey areas.
All the academic staff at Uni have helped me by being understanding
and offering support where I need it.
Any advice for other students thinking of progressing into FE, HE or other related options?
Make sure you have a realistic understanding of your strengths and weaknesses and try to match them up to the course you want to do. If you find a course you really like the sound of don’t let minor things stop you from going for it. If you think you are going to have difficulties in an area then ask what help is available - don’t just give up.Once you get there, if there is anything that you don’t understand, ask! Most of the time I have found that I am not the only one that doesn’t get something, so I help others by bringing it up again.
