FE additional needs case studies
Name:
Nadine Wood
Course:
A2 in Psychology, English Language and English Literature at Gateway Sixth Form College
Previous experience:
I was at Ash Field school for eight years, where I did my GCSE’s in English, Maths, Art, Science, RE, French, Geography, History and ICT. I got grades A-E. I also did ASDAN bronze and silver award and LVF level 2. While I was at school I did a link course to South Leicestershire college where I did a GNVQ in Intermediate Business and got a merit for it. In my spare time I do volunteering for Connexions and Mosaic in various groups.
How I have coped with my current course?
I have coped well with my courses at Gateway, even with some difficulties, which I have had help and support with. The only real difficulty was getting to my lessons as some were in parts of the college that had no access using a lift. This was overcome by the college moving the lessons to another part of the college, which is accessible. I have had support with getting to the classrooms and library, personal care, having access to a laptop, having support on trips and support with exams like extra time. All of this support has enabled me to enjoy my college experience and get qualifications to go onto University.
Any advice for other students?
If students want to go on to FE or HE then they should go for it. There is so much support on offer and colleges are very helpful. Nothing should stop you from reaching your goals and fulfilling your dreams.
