FE additional needs case studies

Name:

Sufiyan Morawala

Course:

AS Level in ICT progressing to A2 next year, Gateway Sixth Form College

Previous Schools:

Ash Field School, I did an ASDAN bronze and silver award. I have also gained a distinction in English, Maths, ICT, Design and Technology and RE. My school had all the facilities I needed for my personal needs and provided support during the lessons.

How have I coped with my current course or option?

I came to Gateway Sixth Form College in 2003 and I found that it had all the facilities I needed to manage my personal and academic requirements. The college has a department called Broadview for Y10 which supports you with all types of needs. The staff at the Broadview Centre are very friendly, helpful and will help out anywhere in the college.

The support I required was a table with adjustable height in my English and Maths classrooms; the Broadview staff organised this for me. They also arranged transport to college and always provided help with my course work if I was finding it difficult to complete. They helped me at lunchtime by holding a lunch tray and taking it back afterwards, and sat with me until I finished my lunch.

Who and what has helped me to succeed?

All the college teachers and staff are so friendly and helpful. They helped me with my coursework in their own time and in the classroom; with this help I was able to meet my unit deadlines. They also helped at exam time by allowing extra time. Only students who have difficulties with writing or understanding text are allowed extra time.

Any advice for other students thinking of progressing into FE, HE or other related options?

Anyone who has disabilities and is thinking of going into further education or higher education should not worry about how they are going to cope with their personal or academic needs. There is a lot of support and staff are available at college or university to help you while you are studying.
