    Further education means staying at school or college after you are 16.

    If you want to stay at school or go to college after you are 16 you will need to decide where you want to go.



    You will need to decide if you want to:

    • Stay at school.
      You can only do this if your school has courses you can do after you are 16.
    • Go to another school
    • Go to college

    What are the differences between staying at school and going to college?

    Staying at school after you are 16

    • This could be easier for you than going somewhere new.
    • You will know the teachers and they will know about any help you need.
    • You will be able to do work experience at college.
    • You might be able to do short courses at college
    • you may be able to go to another school or you could go to college.


    Change Schools

    • You may be able to go to another school.
    • Or you could go to college.



    Going to college after you are 16

    • You may want to go somewhere different to learn.
    • Most students at college will be the same age as you or older.
    • Most courses prepare you for adult life and you can learn about jobs.


    You can find out about colleges by:

    • Going to visit the college


    • Looking at college course books

    • Asking your schools or Connexions Adviser


    There might be a college that is better for you in a different area.

    If so the Learning Skills Council could sometimes help pay for this. This is if a local college cannot meet your needs.

    See your Connexions Adviser if you want to talk about this.


    Students with Disabilities.

    All colleges must treat disabled people fairly.

    You can complain if this does not happen.

    Talk to your Connexions Adviser if you have any problems with this.




    Getting support at college

    Colleges do an assessment to find out what extra help you will need at college.

    For example

    • help with transport or getting around college

    • help with reading and writing.


    At college you can take courses to help you be more independent.

    These might cover things like:

    • independent living skills such as cooking or working with computers
    • reading and writing courses to help you get ready for working
