Context and QCA guidance

Following the publication of the QCA guidance for a Personal Development Curriculum, VESA and Connexions put forward a project bid to Aim Higher to run a project that would help learning organisations make sense of the guidance and put forward a framework to help schools implement good practice in this area.

The driving principle for our work is that the PDC should have the young person and their needs at the centre and should support the Every Child Matters 5 key themes.

Management and contributors

The project has been managed by VESA and Connexions Leicester Shire (Career Learning and Support team). The listed learning organisations have contributed to the project through the steering group and many have supplied case studies to share good practice. We thank them for their time and work.

Keeping young people at the heart

The personal development curriculum is all about the young person so they need to be considered at every step. Click here to find out more about involving young people.

Getting started

As a starting point a PDC diagram was drawn up to show the main areas of the PDC and how the national curriculum can also link in. It shows that all subjects can contribute to skill development in young people and that a good process of review and progression planning enables them to reflect and record this. The skills in the central part of the diagram are those that have been drawn up by QCA in their new Personal Learning and Thinking Skills framework.

The Curriculum Planning Model has been used to structure the support notes and tools for implementing a PDC approach. Please use the diagram to access further guide notes, tools and case studies.
