New PSHEE curriculum proposals

Overview

• The QCA (Qualifications and Curriculum Authority) has proposed that the following are taught within a new curriculum area:

• PSHE
• Work related learning
• Enterprise education
• Personal finance education
• Careers education

• The new curriculum area will be called Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education (or PSHEE in short)


• There is also a complete review of both the Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4 curricula happening (originally separately but now jointly)


• This is supposed to produce a more flexible curriculum, more suited to a wider range of students’ needs


• Personal, Learning and Thinking skills (PLTS): 6 groups of skills essential to young people’s success in learning, life and work

• Team working
• Self-managing
• Independent enquirer
• Reflective learning
• Creative thinking
• Effective participator

• PLTS to be incorporated into the new curriculum, including PSHEE


• There was a consultation process, led by QCA, on the proposed programmes of study for PSHEE, which finished on 30 April 2007

• PSHEE will be organised into 2 main strands:
  
  
• Personal well-being
• Economic well-being (this will eventually have a new name)

• “Economic well-being” will include Careers Education, Work related learning, and Enterprise education
