Making sense of it all for students

To ensure that learning is recognised and embedded reflection needs to be built in to the programme. Ideally this is a time to encourage young people to highlight key learning from the session in terms of knowledge and skills (PLTS). Having clear learning outcomes will help staff to do this effectively and ensure they have been met.

Progress File philosphy

Ideally learning organisations will have a whole school process for recording of achievement or Progress File. Encouraging young people to keep evidence within a portfolio and be responsible for it, gives a feeling of ownership. This can form the basis of action plans, career planning and CVs/personal statements.

Assessment and accreditation of learning

Accredited frameworks can be used to record and reward learning.
It is important to remember that it is the processes and self-development which are key in these learning areas and that this should not be overshadowed by the need to record knowledge.

Accreditation can:

• help structure the learning programme
• set goals/targets for young people
• recognise learning and achievement
• raise self-confidence, self-esteem and motivation
• use the outcomes of accreditation to inform evaluation
• provide evidence at times of transition
