Begin to draw up a short-list of higher education courses and institutions. Attend local or national higher education fairs; they are a good source of useful information and advice. Attend higher education open days and any link courses which are available.

Watch higher education videos and consult official and alternative prospectuses.

Explore opportunities for sponsorship.

Employment or Training
Begin to draw up a short list of career ideas. Research which companies might have employment opportunities.

Start to compile a CV if you don’t already have one.

Research Apprenticeship opportunities.

Summer Term Year 1

Higher Education
Candidates for Oxford or Cambridge or those wanting to study medicine, dentistry, veterinary medicine or veterinary science should obtain application details ready to apply by 15 October.

Continue to research courses and institutions.

Employment or Training
Try to arrange some work experience for the summer holidays.

Complete your application to UCAS using 'Apply' the UCAS on-line application system. If you're thinking of taking an art and design course the application procedure and dates will be different . You can find out more about applications for art and design courses on the UCAS website.

Calculate how much financial support your entitled to using the online calculator at: www.directgov/studentfinance.

Draw up a short list of potential employers and training providers.

15 January is the official closing date for most UCAS applications. The deadline for most art and design courses is 24th March but UCAS recommends you apply before the 6th March to avoid the last minute rush.

If you have applied through UCAS and are not holding any offers you may be able to apply for another course through Extra. Extra allows you to apply for courses with vacancies between the end of February and the end of June.

Apply for student finance online at directgov. Attend higher education open days and/ or interviews.

Employment or Training
See your Connexions personal adviser in school or college.

Send speculative letters and CVs to employers. Look in local press and on school and college noticeboards for vacancies.
