Relationships - Domestic violence

Domestic Violence

Domestic violence includes physical violence such as hitting but also includes:

Financial abuse

Taking a person's money, not letting the person work to earn money or only giving them a small amount to spend.

Sexual abuse

Unwanted sex, rape, making the person take part in sexual acts they do not want to, touching the person against their will.

Psychological abuse

Picking on a person, putting them down, calling them names, intimidating the person by shouting or scaring them, humiliating the person and not allowing the person to have contact with any friends or family.

Spiritual abuse

Not respecting a person's religious or spiritual beliefs, forcing them to take part in religious or spiritual activities against their will and other forms of abuse that use the person's religious beliefs to manipulate them. Can include forced marriages, female genital mutilation, and abductions.

Anyone can be a victim of domestic violence and anyone can be an abuser. It can be a carer or one or more family members. It can also include abuse from a girl or boyfriend. Domestic violence can affect anyone.

Domestic violence affects the whole family. If you feel that you would like support and would like to speak to someone confidentially, call one of these numbers – a trained worker will listen to what you have to say.
