The Leicester and Leicestershire Common Application Process (LeCAP)

What is LeCAP?

The LeCAP is the process of students making choices about what to do after year 11 and then applying for their chosen learning option.

The process begins in year 10 and should be part of a career education programme where students develop the skills needed to make well-informed realistic decisions about their future pathways.  The process usually ends when a young person is settled in a post 16 learning option after year 11.

Why have a Common Application Process?

The reasons for having a Common Application Process and form are

  • All year 11s (and others) have an opportunity to apply for courses at the same time
  • Only one form to complete
  • Less paper
  • Easier for colleges to administer
  • Common system should apply to all colleges thus ensuring equal opportunities for learners
  • The on-line form ensures young people can be identified and supported more effectively.

What does the Process involve?

In year 10 and early in year 11 students should undertake a planned programme of career education, which should prepare them for making the decisions about what to do post 16.  This should include

  • Reading Connexions publications about options eg You Choose 16+, Get Learning, and Get Working.
  • Looking at websites
  • Researching courses and careers in a school information area to check out the qualifications needed for different careers and courses.
  • Reading college prospectuses and looking at their websites
  • Attending open days at local colleges
  • Attending talks given about FE, 6th form and apprenticeships
  • Discussing their choices with parents and carers
  • Asking for advice
