Transport from age 16 is not free. If you are a full time student aged 16 to 19 living in the city you can apply for help with travel costs if you live over three miles away from the college. If you are studying at a college based outside the city, then the course(s) you are studying should not be available at a city college.

This means you will have to pay a set amount per year but the education authority pays the rest. In some cases you may not have to pay anything. See details on the Leicester City Council school and college transport page. Or contact the school or college you wish to attend.

You can apply for help with transport costs before 30th June or during the last term at school. Late applications will be accepted but beware of delays!

If you have a disability and needed extra support to get to school and you now need extra support to get to 6th form or college check the Leicester City Council's website for details of the help available.

If you are going to a college for further education remember each has a different travel support policy and you should contact them to find out more.

See sixth form and college contact details for more info.

You may also be able to apply for an EMA (Education Maintenance Allowance which has some transport cost built in) for more information contact 080 810 16 2 19.

If you live less than 3 miles from 6th form or college and you do not have extra support needs, you may be able to get some money towards travel but this is often ‘means tested’. This support is under review and may not be available to students after the 2007/2008 academic year. Means testing means the amount you get depends on your family’s income. There is a sliding scale, the more income the less you can claim. See contact details for Post 16 Transport Access Fund for more information.
